"Halloween was one of Jonathan’s favourite times of the year. Like so many children, he loved the excitement, the costumes, collecting candy, and the chance to become someone else for the day. But for Jonathan, traditional trick-or-treating came with challenges that most families never had to think about. Walking from house to house was physically exhausting and painful.

Jonathan had a younger sister who had no physical limitations. While she enjoyed Halloween the way most children do, Jonathan had to carefully measure what his body could handle. As a parent, you always wish your children could experience life’s simple joys the same way. That is why the Ability Hive Accessible Halloween event is so special. It is creating an experience where accessibility isn’t an afterthought it is the foundation. Every child and every family can simply enjoy the magic together.

Jonathan was happiest when he was surrounded by people. He loved family gatherings, making others laugh, and being part of every celebration. He also had the most incredible imagination. He could lose himself for hours in fantasy books, imagining he had magical powers and extraordinary abilities. In those stories, his condition disappeared, and anything was possible. His loyal dog and best friend, Gibson, was always his faithful sidekick, joining him on every imaginary adventure.

When I heard about the vision of transforming the trail leading into Jonathan Pitre Accessible Park into an Enchanted Trail, I couldn’t help but smile. I could picture Jonathan taking in every magical detail, believing every creature was real, and probably convinced the rest of us to believe it too. It feels like the perfect way to welcome families into a place built on inclusion, wonder, and belonging.

For me, that is Jonathan’s legacy. Not just a park that bears his name, but a community that continues to find new ways to ensure every person can experience the same joy, excitement, and memories regardless of their abilities. I can’t think of  more beautiful way to celebrate Jonathan’s spirit than by seeing families gather, laugh, and make magical memories together."
